Brazil court demands detail on 17 firms’ R$2.6bn health claim
The claim also seeks double restitution of amounts wagered by people diagnosed with gambling addiction.
The hit
A Brazilian federal court has ordered the government to properly justify its lawsuit accusing 17 licensed betting operators of driving losses at the public health system, SUS. Judge Helio Silvio Ourem Campos gave the Attorney General’s Office 30 days to amend its petition, which seeks reimbursement plus at least R$1bn ($190m) in collective moral damages.
Why it matters
For operators including Bet365, Betano & Blaze, the ruling buys time rather than relief. The judge has not dismissed the claim, just demanded the government show its working on causation, methodology & which costs count.
The record
| Damages sought | R$1bn / $190m in collective moral damages (AGU) |
|---|---|
| Case filed | 28 September 2026, Federal Court of Pernambuco |
| Ruling signed | 29 September 2026 |
| Ministry of Health estimate cited | At least R$2.6bn / $500m in preliminary SUS loss estimates (AGU) |
| Operators named | 17, including Bet365, Betano, Superbet, Blaze & Betfair |
What happens next
The AGU must file an amended petition detailing its data sources & methodology. The case then returns to Judge Campos, who will also rule on the pending injunction request.
