Fraudster uses Quick Boys’ name to con Dutch gambling regulator
The regulator has filed a police report on the fraud, according to the Kansspelautoriteit.
The hit
The Kansspelautoriteit has revoked a lottery licence obtained through fraud, according to the regulator. An unknown party posed as the chairman of Dutch football club Quick Boys to get the licence, then used it to run eight fake lottery websites. Quick Boys never applied for a licence & is itself a victim of identity fraud, the regulator said.
Why it matters
Anyone who bought a ticket or entered personal details on the fake sites could have that data misused, for example for phishing or identity fraud, the regulator said, adding it does not know what the fraudster does with the data. It says this is not an isolated case: fraudsters are increasingly abusing clubs’ names & licences to look legitimate. Consumers should check the Kansspelwijzer register or contact a club directly before buying lottery tickets linked to its name.
The record
| Licence holder abused | Football club Quick Boys (Katwijk), named without its knowledge |
|---|---|
| Fake websites listed | loterij.quickboys.nl, loterijenqb.com & 6 others (Kansspelautoriteit) |
| Regulator’s response | Identity & domain checks on applicants tightened (Ella Seijsener, Kansspelautoriteit) |
What happens next
Anyone who bought a ticket should contact their bank to reverse payment, report it to police & the Fraudehelpdesk, & notify the Kansspelautoriteit via its portal.
